She uses digital technology to design and make her pieces – 3D digital modelling (Anarkik3DDesign programme) and 3D printing. She uses these technologies to add value to waste plastic to keep it out of landfill and our oceans.

Description

The concept behind Steffany lightshade is Ann Marie Shillito’s way of demonstrating that waste plastic is for her a precious material. She constantly designs to reduce her plastic waste by repurposing it. By exploring her designing and making processes she is developing products and forms new to her.

She uses digital technology to design and make her pieces – 3D digital modelling (Anarkik3DDesign programme) and 3D printing. The head space to seriously work towards making her working practice more sustainable came with COVID lockdown when she had time to search her materials and their source. The filament she used for 3D printing the prototype hexagonal and pentagonal units for her Steffany lightshade is made from recycled plastic. The colourful inserts she makes by fusing waste plastics and fabric. Much of the original experimentation happened over lockdown and focusing on this way of working was also a coping strategy. She joined Applied Arts Scotland ‘Closing the Loop’ group for regular online meetups, support and encouragement, a weekend residency, and an exhibition in 2022.
